Outdoor Flooring at Parquets.com: Expert Guide to Composite Decking and Artificial Grass

Looking for durable, anti-slip, low-maintenance outdoor flooring? At Parquets.com we specialise in composite decking (technological decking), PVC decking, tropical hardwood decking, bamboo decking and premium artificial grass. Below you’ll find what each material is, what it’s made of, how it’s installed, recommended maintenance, guide prices and the brands we supply in the UK.

What is composite decking (technological decking)?

Composite decking is an extruded decking board made from wood fibres and polymers. It delivers the natural look of timber with excellent weather resistance and minimal upkeep. Co-extruded boards add a full 360° protective cap that seals the board and improves UV, stain and fade performance.

Typical composition

  • WPC core: wood flour/fibre + PE or PP polymer.

  • Optional co-extruded cap: perimeter seal with anti-UV and anti-stain additives.

  • Surface: fine-brushed finish, EIR (Embossed-In-Register) grain and micro-bevel.

  • Slip resistance: common R10–R12 anti-slip ratings—ideal for poolside and wet zones.

Outdoor flooring materials we supply

WPC composite decking

  • Advantages: very low maintenance, anti-slip, splinter-free, great dimensional stability.

  • Considerations: allow for thermal expansion (joints and installation rules); darker colours can heat up more in direct sun.

Cellular PVC decking

  • 100% polymer decking with high waterproofing.

  • Advantages: very easy to clean, top resistance to water and stains.

  • Considerations: higher expansion; mid-to-high cost.

Tropical hardwood decking

  • Ipé, Cumaru, Teak and other species with very high natural durability.

  • Advantages: premium look and long service life.

  • Considerations: needs periodic oiling; without protection the tone will silver under UV.

Thermally modified timber

  • Heat-treated wood for improved stability and durability.

  • Advantages: warm aesthetics and lighter weight.

  • Considerations: upkeep with oil/lasur.

Bamboo decking

  • Pressed bamboo fibres with resins for high performance outdoors.

  • Advantages: very hard-wearing with a contemporary look.

  • Considerations: regular oiling and attention to ventilation and drainage.

Click deck tiles

  • Modular wood or composite tiles to refresh solid substrates quickly.

  • Advantages: fast, reversible installation.

  • Considerations: not a substitute for a professional substructure on large areas.

Resistance to rain, sun and temperature changes

  • Co-extruded composite and PVC decking: outstanding resistance to water, humidity, fungi and UV, with very good colour stability.

  • Timber and bamboo: fully suitable for exterior use when maintenance, jointing, ventilation and drainage are respected.

  • Safety: anti-slip finishes up to R12 for wet conditions.

Colours and finishes

From light greys to anthracite, teak-like browns, walnut and ipé tones, plus sand and graphite. Choices include brushed textures, EIR grain, reversible boards, solid or hollow profiles and XL formats.

Recommended maintenance

  • Co-extruded composite & PVC: water + neutral detergent, soft brush; no varnishes or lasures required.

  • Standard composite: same routine; may need slightly more frequent cleaning.

  • Timber, thermowood & bamboo: oil/lasur 1–2 times per year depending on exposure; regular cleaning and management of natural greying.

  • Deck tiles: follow the base material’s care; tiles can be lifted to clean the substrate.

How outdoor decking is installed

Substructure

  • Joists/battens in aluminium or autoclave-treated timber on a solid base with 1–2% fall for drainage.

  • Joist centres as per each brand’s technical sheet.

Fixing and finishing

  • Hidden clips or polymer/steel clamps, A2/A4 stainless fasteners.

  • Starter and end clips, edge trims, corner profiles, end caps and skirting.

  • Expansion gaps around perimeters and between boards for composite/PVC.

  • Useful accessories: geotextile, adjustable pedestals, EPDM tape, stair nosing, and LED lighting.

Pros and points to consider

Pros

  • Low maintenance and long-lasting performance outdoors.

  • Anti-slip, comfortable and safe around swimming pools.

  • Wide range of colours/textures with quick installation.

To consider

  • Expansion in WPC/PVC requires correct jointing and installation.

  • Dark colours can run hotter in full sun.

  • Timber and bamboo need upkeep to preserve their original tone.
